Nike Air Zoom Elite S Golf Shoes Review

My car once ran out of petrol one beautiful summers evening in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town was 15 miles away and mobile phones that weren’t the size of small children didn’t exist. I couldn’t call anyone so I had to walk 15 miles in flip flops back to the village. 15 long miles in flip-flops that drove me so crazy with their incessant ‘flip-flopping’ that by mile 5, I had thrown them into a hedge and decided to walk barefoot.

Lucky for me I managed to flag a lift to the nearest phonebox and one call to Mr RAC to say come fix my car and one call to my darling wife to tell her I wasn’t dead/ playing golf and I sorted the problem. I will however never forget how utterly uncomfortable that walk was and that day I vowed never to wear flip-flops again. It was a foot epiphany. My feet should always be cushioned in luxury well fitting shoes.

This brings me on nicely to the new Nike Air Zoom Elite S Golf Shoes. For a penny under £90 you get a good looking pair of Nike golf shoes which obviously means you get all the usual great Nike features such as great natural foot flex when walking and the Nike Scorpion Stinger Spikes which nestle into the grass without damaging the green but plant your foot solid to the ground no matter what. On top of all that you get the Nike 1 year limited waterproof warranty.

The best bit though? The best part of this shoe is the visible cushy heel air-sole unit which should like a load of bollocks thought up by some marketing men but what it really means is a lightweight cushioning for your foot. Close your eyes and picture your feet with tiny clouds around them and you get an idea of how comfortable the Nike Air Zoom Elite S really are. Oh and you get a 45 days comfort warranty whatever that is.

Nike SP-5 III Golf Shoe Review

When I first started playing golf (before Nike Golf) my dad took me to find a pair of golf shoes one day. I looked around for a shoe that felt comfortable enough to walk in but with enough grip to keep me from falling on my backside when the grass was damp (something not uncommon in the UK). There was nothing. Being a young dedicated follower of fashion I didn’t have much choice of footwear for the course. I was stuck with some grotty brown shoes. I didn’t feel cool.

We all know history likes to repeat itself and last week my son decided it was time that he would like a nice, new pair of golf shoes, but not he added anything that didn’t look cool. It seems golf has become as much about looking good on the greens as playing well. Obviously not being made of money I wanted to keep my budget under £50. A quick look round a few sites and I found the perfect shoe for him.

Nike SP-5 III is a high-performance that is being tipped as an affordable course dominator.

Feeling comfortable from the moment that you slip them on the latest in an ever increasing range of affordable Nike golf shoes that have been designed to feel comfortable, grippy but not break the bank.

Anyway after 36 holes later here is his quick review:

“I thought that it was a good shoe. It gave me great grip on the grass and I felt very comfortable in them. My first round in them, I shot a great round. That is a good sign. I really lik how they look too”

What the manufacturers say
Built to be soft on the feet and great on greens, these Nike SP-5 IV Shoes combine a cushioned air sole with Scorpion Stinger Spikes for comfortable stability underfoot. A waterproof membrane and breathable mesh maintain maximum dryness in all weather conditions. Nike SP-5 IV Shoes are available in all sizes from 7-12 and in a variety of striking designs including black, white/black and white/green. This is an excellent example of what a great golf shoe should be!

  • SP-5 IV Shoes Breathable Inner Mesh Lining
  • Great Athletic Last
  • Moisture Wicking Inner Mesh Lining
  • 100% Waterproof Membrane
  • Air-Sole Heel & Green Friendly Rubber Outsole

How do Golf Shoes Improve the Game

Hola from sunny Spain.

After reading your site I know that from time to time you answer some of your loyal readers’ questions.

I was wondering if you could provide me with some advice. I know that most clubs won’t let you out with regular street shoes and they insist on golf shoes but my question is why do they insist? If it was a case of grip couldn’t I wear football boots or if it’s a comfort thing wouldn’t I be better with walking boots?
Regards
Tony

Hi Tony,
I don’t think I have ever been asked that question before. I think most people accept that they need to wear golf shoes on a golf course much as a football player wears football boots on the pitch, anyway I have asked around in the club house and here are a couple of answers that were suggested including one from our club pro.

Golf Shoes keep your feet from slipping during the swing, thus causing a miss hit. Having your feet anchored to the ground helps so much during the transition from your backswing. Golf shoes also help reduce slipping which can also cause injuries.(i.e. pulled muscles, etc.) and unlike football boots they have been designed with the golfer in mind. The spikes are exactly where you need them to be so you wont slip during your swing.
- Keith

They provide traction when you play so your feet don’t slip when you swing. The extra traction helps you control your lower body that will in turn help you control your swing. You’ll definitely notice a difference in your swing when you play with them.
- Neil

A lot of research goes into designing a golf shoe! The shoe is a very important piece of equipment to playing golf. Shoes are designed to help you have good traction during your golf swing so you can stay balanced. Golf shoes are also made for comfort and to keep your feet nice and dry!
- Helen

So Tony to sum up Golf Shoes aren’t necessary but are insisted on because they dramatically improve your game and won’t chew up the grass when you’re walking round.

I hope this advice helps.

How to Pick the Perfect Golf Shoes

Golf shoes are a fundamental piece of kit for any golfer. The fact that 98% of courses wont let you out without them aside, the average golfer walks around 4 to 5 miles during a round and spends a good 4 hours on his feet. This is why you really can’t afford not to have a good pair of shoes. We have put together a list of a few important points to remember when choosing golf shoes.

Fit

  • Before selecting a size, measure both feet. If you get different measurements, then choose the size that fits the larger foot.
  • When you try new golf shoes, wear the kind of socks that you intend to wear with your shoes.
  • Test your shoes by standing on one foot at a time. Wiggle your toes and stand on your tiptoes. Shoes should bend at the same place where your foot bends.
  • Golf shoes should fit tighter in the middle portion of the foot than other shoes. This area offers the most support while swinging. The middle portion of the shoe will stretch over time.
  • Be sure that you have one-half inch of space from the end of your big toe to the tip of the shoe.

Waterproofing

Depending on the conditions you play in, you may want to consider a waterproof shoe. Waterproof shoes are more expensive, but they are much more comfortable in wet conditions. Look for a good warranty; some manufacturers such as nike golf shoes offer a 2 year warranty. Leather uppers are the best for providing support and waterproofing. Shoes made of synthetic

leather are less expensive but do not breathe as well nor do they offer as much waterproof protection.

Style

Last, but not least, choose the style of shoe you feel most comfortable wearing. Golf shoes come in more options today than ever before and include traditional saddle, trendy styles, athletic styling and even golf sandals for those that take the laid back approach to the game.

Nike SP-8 TW Tour Golf Shoes Review

Nike Golf Shoes have become a regular sight out on fairways around the world. This is manly down to the living golf legend that is Tiger Woods. Could his success be down to his shoes? We have been lucky enough to spend some time in his shoes to find out.

Before I start with this review I must admit that every year I buy the Nike Golf shoes Tiger wears and every year I am impressed with the quality, style and finish of the shoes but I have tried to keep this unbiased.

The Nike SP-8 TW Tour Shoe is one of the most comfortable shoes around. There is no need for a cart when you can walk in these and this is largely down to the Forefoot Flex Channel grooves. The natural flex of the foot needed to walk the course in comfort is enhanced with Forefoot Flex Channel grooves. Regardless of terrain, your foot flexes where it’s supposed to, especially on demanding uneven ground and hilly lies.

There is more grip in these shoes than in a room full of rock climbers but this doesn’t cause the shoe to feel heavy or unbalanced. Nerves before monster drives were banished to the back of my mind. I trusted the shoes to grip and they didn’t let me down.

Aesthetically these shoes look great, simple, refined and elegant. If I may be permitted to liken the world of Golf Shoes to cars then these shoes are the equivalent of maybach. Quiet and dignified in their appearance but with no need to scream “look at me”. Those in the know will give you a respectful nod, knowing that you are a golfer with taste. They also have the added advantage that they won’t make you look like a footballer while on the greens.

Now for the price. For around £89 you can buy these shoes. £89! That’s a bargin especially when you think they come with a years warranty.

Ok so I might have failed to make this review unbiased but the truth is that these shoes are simply amazing. I played better in them (down to the shoe or thinking I am tiger who knows?) but they are just amazing.

What Nike Say:
Hit the course in this ultra-sporty, hyper-comfortable golf shoe with visible Air unit and large contrast Swoosh emblazoned on both sides of the Shoe.

Features:

  • Premium full-grain leather
  • Low profile caged Air-Sole unit
  • Full-length Poron sockliner
  • TPU T@ C5 (traction at contact) with Nike Power Channel outsole
  • Scorpion Stinger Spikes and Q-LOK system
  • Built on the Athletic last
  • One-year limited waterproof warranty

A History of Golf Shoes

As with most technology, the humble pair of golf shoes has evolved over time with shoes today lighter and more robust than they have ever been. However the move from metal spikes to the modern shoe hasn’t been without its share of controversy.

At the turn of the 20th century golf shoes were in a word, lethal. Spikes in the golf shoes were known to gauge into the feet and the heel of the shoe were weighted with 850 grams. Making life on the fairways dangerous.

The controversy around wearing the correct men’s golf shoes to help improve the game has been ongoing for over half a century. In the Scottish publication, ‘The Golfer’s Manual’ in 1857, reference was made to men’s golf shoes proving that the footwear has always been a bone of contention: “Let the novice invest in a pair of stout shoes (boots constrain the ankles too much), roughed with small nails or sprigs, and he will march comfortably and safely over the most slippery ground that can be turned out by the meridian sun in the dog days.”

Over the years, men’s golf shoes have evolved into lighter, more flexible shoes that have lost the cumbersome metal spikes but not without a battle. A debate raged about metal spiked men’s golf shoes as research studies proved that the spikes are detrimental to green turf and putting quality. As a result, many golf courses in the UK ban men’s metal-spiked golf shoes and there is a greater variety of rubber-soled studded golf shoes thanks to advances in technology. The decline of metal spikes in men’s golf shoes means less damage to courses, clubhouses and rubber designs are often more comfortable for the player.

As the game of golf has become more and more popular, ladies and men’s golf shoes have become a major concern for golf clubs that have to maintain their greens. More players means more damage to the greens. Eliminating or minimizing the effect of spikes in ladies and men’s golf shoes has an enormous impact on reducing the maintenance costs and improving the quality of the greens.
